⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 Stars

A Blood Queen and a Sun Queen, one prophesied to save the world and the other to be it’s undoing. We follow two perspectives in this story, Rielle and Eliana. After Reille exposes her power in order to save the crown prince, she must undergo a series of trials to prove she is the Sun Queen. If the Archon decides she is not, she will risk execution. Centuries later we follow Eliana, the Dread of Orline, intent to do whatever it takes to ensure her family’s safety. Even if it means putting others at risk. But not everything is as it seems, and as Rielle and Eliana’s stories intertwine we see that the fate of the world will lie in one of their hands.

I really loved this one more than I was expecting to! I didn’t find any part of the story to be slow, and I was always engaged with what was going on. I loved following Rielle as she underwent different trials for her elemental powers. I’m a sucker for any sort of fantasy trial trope. There’s also a character in her chapters that gave me serious Darkling vibes, which was fascinating to see. Rielle was definitely my favorite perspective to read from.

Even though I found Eliana’s story to be interesting, there were several times I wanted to punch her in the throat. But I suppose that’s the point, since she does go through some much-needed character growth by the end. While I’m still not totally sold on her, I’m interested to see what she’ll do in the next book!

Overall, the world was really fascinating and I’m excited to read the next book as there are still answers I’m dying for!
